2The Tsukiji Market, or the so-called “inner market” at Tsukiji, Tokyo, is to close for relocation to Toyosu in October, 2018. Now is the time to experience at first-hand what the historical food market is like.
The inner market is part of Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market. The market deals with two primary lines of food: fish/seafood and fruits/vegetables, served at hundreds of intermediate wholesaler stalls. Fruits/vegetables section rebuilt in 60’s to 70’s consists of reinforced concrete structures, while the world-famous fish/seafood section, just across a few forklift lanes, still remains as two enormous steel structures full of Bauhaus-like charms built in the mid 30’s.
